As far as program goes, I think I'm scaring myself into procrastination. I feel like with all the people giving me raised eyebrows about the choice of site that I need to get it just right; hence the hesitation. I know I'd like something mixed use- and I know that it also needs to be something that will help create that special connection. That's about it. That site is so special I feel like I need many things crammed in there to make it exciting, and yet I feel like that might take away from the importance of it. So do I chose one main function or many? Right now I have tentatively decided on a Theater/ Assembly Hall, Restaurant, Gallery, renewing the original Train Stop, which will require a large Waiting Space, and a Technology Center, with small adult classrooms off a main computer lab space for public use. I have also been toying with the idea of moving the Providence Journal location into a wing of my building. Essentially, I want it to be the gateway to the city visually, and the representative cultural center. The new designated 'head' of Providence. A place to learn about Providence and a production center towards its renewal. I feel like by bringing the culture and innovation to this location it will help to spur the extension of down city across the great divide of I95. It will connect to the mall and a possible connection to the convention center will help to make it an extension of the activities already in place in that location. Any thoughts or suggestions?

i think that this might be a good program... obviously, one of the things that you have to deal with is the site (and its size)... and, as a result, it is not an easy "parasite" project. any program that has mass and density (and scale) will work for this site ... and obviously, programs that refer to what is already existing work best. perhaps in your program you specify open space (ie. gardens, etc).?
finally, i'm not sure that the "train stop" idea will work given its proximity to the train station... perhaps something else (unless, of course ,you are proposing that the train station moves... ?)

i like the idea of changing the train station stop to my more 'central' location. i think it might help the project become more 'successful' in its usefulness to the city and use.

the other idea was building up the land as in one of my precedents to create more space for the outdoor program. I have talked to one of the city planners and have learned that that whole section of highway i am proposing to build under needs its infrastructure replaced within the next two years or it's facing failure. the current layout is up for demolition, but so far noone has been able to figure out how to direct traffic while its under construction. could i potentially disregard the current infrastructure and build the highway above my project- providing a a dual solution? maybe i'm biting off more than i can chew- but it seems like it would maximize potential with the site and be amore realistic if i could play around with this concept.
